 Mia & Topaz
by Sally Reuther

Amazing communications can just happen!  I wasn’t even trying to communicate with our two dogs Maia and Topaz one evening.  I had been throwing a tennis ball for Topaz to chase, and once again he had nudged it and under the couch it went. Since I had already retrieved it several times I was not interested in moving the couch again.  Topaz was trying so hard to get it out on his own, but his short legs just weren’t long enough!  After watching him for a bit I said to him, “Topaz, why don’t you ask Maia to get your ball?  Her legs are longer than yours.”  That’s all it took!  I saw Topaz look at Maia, and within 30 seconds Maia came over to the couch, lay down and reached under with her paw and got the ball out.  My husband was sitting in the chair beside the couch and he was speechless.  It’s one of the clearest examples of pure animal communication that I have experienced!

When our dog Maia had to go in for surgery on her nose to remove a growth, we were all concerned about how it would go.  I was sitting with her at the hospital waiting for the surgeon to come in and talk to us about the procedure.  She was nervous and wanting to leave this strange place.  I got her to sit beside me and I began thinking calming thoughts.  I decided to try talking with Topaz, our other dog who is Maia’s constant companion and the easy going, calm one of the two.  I told him where we were and I felt his calm energy come across to me and to Maia.  I told him that we were concerned for Maia and could he help us keep her calm and let her know that everything was going to be okay.  What I got back from him was a bit of a surprise!  He very clearly told me that he would make her laugh. I asked him how he would do that and he said he would tell her a joke!  I smiled at that, said to him, “Oh, so you’re a comedian!”  I then asked if he tell me the joke.  He was eager to tell it and seemed quite pleased with himself.  This is the joke he told me:  What has three eyes?  I said back to him, “I don’t know, what has three eyes?”  His answer was quick – Maia!  I want, I want, I want!  This is absolutely how Topaz sees Maia!  She is the alpha dog, and everything is always about her.  She does “want” things all of the time.  For Topaz to acknowledge that, and make a joke of it is truly incredible.  It gave me a huge insight into their relationship, and showed me just how much Topaz care about Maia.

Both Maia (a mixed Golden Retriever/Border Collie) and Topaz (a Shiba Inu) are adopted.  They didn’t know each other before coming to live with us. Maia came to us first as a 5 year old, and 2 months later we adopted Topaz who was about 7 years old.  We have now had them for two years and they are like an old married couple!  Sort of like David and I!
